Field Day – Cross Slot Seeding Unit

Agman Consulting held a field day this week to examine a demonstration Cross Slot seeding unit

Regular field days with machinery working in paddock conditions allows Agman growers to make informed choices with their machinery purchasing decisions. Part of what Agman Consulting does is offer advice on the best available technology to achieve uniform plant stands. Working closely with machinery manufacturers, Agman is able to showcase new technology – in this case, the first in Australia.

The Cross Slot seeder was developed in New Zealand and is marketed throughout the world. They have recently developed a prototype mud scraping blade to fit to the seeders.

The demo unit trialled was delivered into the country last week and this was its first hit out in the country. The machine was put through its paces under moist, heavy clay conditions.

Agman understands the importance of conserving moisture at sowing, placing the seed in a favourable environment under all conditions and achieving quick and uniform crop establishment, even with marginal soil moisture.

“A crop with well placed seeds in a favourable micro-environment has far greater yield potential. It achieves early secondary root development and is not competing with itself in the early stages of setting yield potential”

Steve Todd, Agman Consulting, September 2011
